The Pipes Defenses

Neal Groep stomped out of the gymnasium after the fight, heading towards the South dormitory tower.
"Neal, where you going?" It was Chris Venatio yelling after him from across the grassy area.
Neal stopped abruptly and turned, "Yeah, what do you want with a spinning protonic loser."
       "I want your help."
"I'm worthless," Neal yelled. "Didn't you see me in there?"
Chris moved carefully closer to him, as if he was dealing with a potential suicide victim, "That wasn't you, didn't you see what happened?"
Neal just stood sullenly, head down, shoulders sagging.
"Didn't you see them?" Chris moved closer still, pressing his point with conviction. "Didn't you see how they cast their spells? It was an energy field."
Neal looked up with despairing confusion, "I didn't see anything except that I was taken out; I didn't even fire a shot."
“Stacy Delecto and her girlfriends had all three of you in energy charms. Didn't you know? That's what they've been doing for the Champions. Don't you remember when the others mutinied?”
Neal turned a little purple, but made no reply.
Chris was close enough to talk with him now. “The neurons in your brain function at particular frequencies, depending upon the emotions at work. There's one frequency that creates attraction in men, so Stacy figured it out and tuned a small dark energy generator to that frequency. The dark energy penetrates your neurons and causes them to operate at that frequency. You can't help but be wildly attracted to her. It's that necklace she wears; she and her girlfriends did that during the fight. That's what happened to you.”
The veins in Neal's neck grew large and pulsed, “So that's what happened to me at the fight? That's what happened to Bill, Dustin, and Jeff when they quit the group? The girls got to all of us with their necklace things?”
"You can do something about it,” Chris pleaded. “Follow me; we've got work to do."
Half an hour later, Chris and a calmed Neal arrived at Chris' workshop he had set up at Atraville. “Protons! This place is atomic!” Neal exclaimed upon entering. “It's got everything!”
“Alright, so we need something to counteract dark energy propagating at a particular frequency.”
“So you say,” Neal answered, playing with an earlier version of Venatio weaponry he had picked up off a table and almost hitting Chris with a beam of white light.
“Tim wasn't affected after he became angry,” Chris said thoughtfully.
Neal had picked up another version of a weapon, but Chris had ducked to avoid being fired upon.
“In the ancient days of radio, when they wanted to block out a transmission, they simply broadcast white noise all around the target.”
Neal flipped a switch on a grayish device and caused such a loud blaring noise that Chris jumped back from his workbench until Neal hurriedly shut it off with a sheepish look.
“What if we do something similar,” Chris mumbled, returning to his workbench with a careful, sideways glance at Neal. He picked up a silvery pen-like device and began fiddling with its tiny circuitry using some long, metallic tools. Soon, he had a modified dark energy stick. “This will not only protect you from the dark charms, but will energize you with dark energy at the same time.”
“Hey, isn't that what the girls are using?” Neal asked, picking up a crude necklace with a small black box at the end.
“Don't turn that-” Chris started, but it was too late. Fortunately, Chris had switched on the modified energy stick, and subsequently looked to Neal with a big smile.
       “It works!”
