It was just this last Friday that the NCAA made the Venatio Energy Commission (VEC) official, announcing that the first energy tournament will be held starting on Saturday, August 5th, at Atraville College. It is to be held at Atraville in honor of Chris Venatio, who invented the game while a student there, graduating only a few years ago. Energy fighting has subsequently spread through the Venatio Corporation which Chris founded to market the various weaponry and products of the game. Students at colleges and universities have adopted it with lightning speed, and the Venatio Corporation is already boasting revenues of over a quarter of a million, making it one of the fasted growing companies in the world.
But it hasn't been just college students who have became its advocates, street energy gangs and powerlords have also found the weaponry useful. The Chicago Police Commissioner stated last week that there was substantial evidence of criminal activity using the products sold by the Venatio Corporation. Something had to be done, and the NCAA stepped forward with a brilliant stroke: the VEC.
The commission wanted a legitimate avenue for the game to be exercised, and a tournament was considered the best way of engaging the most possible parties, thereby taking much of its activity off the streets. By one bold stroke the commission has created new activities for today's youth and removed potential crime from the streets.
A Venatio match ends after three ten minute periods, or when all three participants from either team have been knocked off their feet or outside the ring. Equipment consists of an energy weapon, commonly called a sword, energy shielding for protection, and an energy source. A principle component of the sport is the ingenuity that each team exerts in the weaponry, the protection, and the power source. This makes the outcome rather unpredictable.
This first tournament is expected to consist of some 20 odd teams from throughout the world. Although a larger share of the teams are expected to be from Atraville College, there will certainly be some teams from surrounding schools and even a few gangs teams involved. International teams will compete in their native countries, and the best will travel to take part at Atraville. The top two teams are widely predicted to be the Champions and the Pipes, but hopes are divided as to which will take the tournament.
Future year participation is expected to increase dramatically so that even perhaps a whole season will be needed for the tournament, something more akin to soccer or basketball. For now, the tournament is expected to draw sparse recognition from the public in general, although from students and on the street it is expected to be a major hit.
