Energy Bullies

In the subsequent weeks, the members of the Pipes had taken to walking around the campus together, what Neal Groep of the Pipes called 'patrolling their territory.' Whenever they found one of the Champions alone, Neal and the others felt it their responsibility to let them know that they were the Pipes. This is exactly what happened when they chanced upon Jason Volgende walking without Cecil Metus or his friends Brad Aanhang or Antony Seurata, which was unfortunate for Jason.
"Hey pion, where you headin'?" Neal asked belligerently, standing directly in his way, a menacing look on his large face. This was rather scary for Jason, since Neal was burly and larger than any of the others in the Pipes. Jason was far too skinny and small to be able to protect himself against Neal alone, not to mention the other Pipes.
As Tim Buzi took the position behind him, his first response was, "Where's Cecil? Cecil, I need help!"
But Cecil wasn't there. He couldn't be everywhere at once. He couldn't be like the omni- electric field, which permeated everywhere on the campus. So Jason would have to face the Pipes alone.
      "What is it?" Jason asked.
"Another invention by Venatio," Neal spat. "It's the Rupter."
      Tim chuckled ominously behind him.
Neal was holding a kluge of an object in his hand, looking like it had been put together with parts from somebody's garage. Welded gray shafts stuck out at oblique angles, with multi- colored wires connected to strange dials and knobs and a silvery ball at one end. A wide, gray shaft was pointed in his face.
"Do you want to know what it does?" Neal asked.
Jason looked white, but wasn't going to go down easy, "Just another protonic omni-powered thing that can't do anything-"
"It uses dark energy, not omni-electricity,” Neal interrupted thickly.
"Why don't you show him?" Tim spat from behind.
“You'll know its dark energy when I pull this trigger,” Neal growled.
“Why?” Jason asked sarcastically. “What's going to happen to me? Some kind of spooky 'dark shock'?”
"Yeah, you'll feel a shock, alright." It was Bill Manias this time, taking his place on another side of Jason as Dustin Rajongo took another so that Jason was completely surrounded by Neal, Tim, Dustin and Bill. Bill was a tough, wiry guy that had a scholar's look with narrow, thoughtful face and red eyes that blazed with anger.
"It's called a Rupter because it disrupts everything," Dustin said squeakily.
"It's not the kind of shock you think," Bill said slowly, but laced with syrupy venom. "It won't be a big shock."
"I knew it," Jason said snidely with a deprecating smirk.
"You don't know nuthin," Neal blurted.
"But the terror comes after the shock," Bill continued slowly. "The rupter will isolate you, make you turn away from everybody because you're ashamed of yourself and everybody else."
      Jason laughed openly.
"You won't think it's so funny," Dustin squeaked.
"You'll feel the stabs of guilt and loneliness," Bill continued slowly. "Long, painful stabs that eat gas from the insides out."
“Stop it,” he laughed louder. “You're scaring me!”
"DO IT," Tim hollered angrily from behind.
As they stomped away, Jason was left kneeling on the campus walkway with his face in his hands.
