Todd’s Party

It was a larger house than Joram expected from a college student, with polished hardwood floors, elegant furniture, and crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceilings. Joram Contendo, Nick Soek, Anika Perperam, Earlen Uekte, and Tomma Torstig stood at the entrance, gawking at a place that belonged rather with some corporate executive than a college student.
“Joram, my big boson, welcome!” announced Todd Vals with a big smile to match the house. “It’s great to have a celebrity at my party. Welcome girls,” he continued as he exchanged party hugs with Anika, Earlen, and Tomma. “Nick! It’s always good to have an air soccer star in my house.”
“Look, there’s Stacy,” announced Anika, with her bold, sharp nose pointed in her direction.
Stacy Delecto looked at Joram in a way that made his knees want to buckle as she came over to greet them. His blurred vision was all hair and skin and sizzling smile.
“That's Eric Ludus,” Nick said, pointing towards a tall, robust guy surrounded by a large number of others. “He plays on the Atraville Air Soccer team.”
But Nick hadn't needed to point him out, because Anika and Earlen had already noticed. “He's friends with Todd,” Stacy said, and Joram's knees grew weak all over again.
“He's a star,” Anika said in a singsong voice.
       “Ooohhh,” crooned Earlen.
“I can bring him over,” said Stacy.
“How can you do that?” Anika asked pointedly. “He's surrounded! Look at all those people around him.”
“Watch,” she said as she walked over to Eric's fan club. Joram saw her slip among the others, and saw Eric's dark eyebrows rise and his face brighten. They exchanged some words, in which Joram thought he saw Stacy's face hollowed in shadow. From that distance, she somehow had lost her charm. She looked like just a typical college girl with high cheekbones and shoulder-length brownish hair; not unattractive, but also not particularly beautiful, and certainly not the vixen over which his head had spun moments earlier. Eric's head, however, was showing distinct signs of distress. His eyes had opened wide, his tongue was half out of his mouth, and his forehead was glistening with sweat.
"Something's up; she looks dark," Joram mumbled so that only Nick and Tomma could hear.
       “Yeah,” Tomma replied angrily.
Stacy moved closer to Eric as his face intensified and beads of sweat ran down his forehead. She was talking while moving closer yet. Eric turned beat red and Tomma turned jealous purple. Although there were many pressed together in their group, Eric was concentrating only on her. Actually, Stacy was doing all the talking while the air soccer star was under some kind of hypnosis. She grabbed his hand and he followed her like an obedient puppy back to Anika and Earlen while his fans watched with a mixture of surprise and disappointment covering their faces.
“Eric, these are my new friends Anika and Earlen,” Stacy said, “and I think you already know Tomma.”
“Ah, ‘allo Tomma, 'allo Anika, Earlen,” Eric mumbled, eyes glued on Stacy. He was a size larger than Nick, hulking over them as he stood nervously by Stacy's side, although he didn't bear much resemblance to the courageous athlete whom had torn up the air soccer field the day before with the high score for the game, giving Atraville the victory. Joram noticed a necklace swinging around her neck. It wasn't the kind of necklace a girl like her would wear. It was more like a string with a small box the size of an energy stick.
“I think she’s using dark energy,” Tomma said quietly to Joram and Nick, when she saw Joram was staring at it.
Joram looked back at her questioningly, wondering if she was just jealous over Eric. “I don't think dark energy can do anything like that, can it? I've never heard of anything like that.”
Tomma shook her head wildly in disagreement, her face looking red and distraught.
Nick didn't answer, since his attention was transfixed on Stacy.
