Move over air soccer; move over, NASPLANE, there's a new sport in town, and its gathering crowds by the hundreds. College campuses and even primary schools across the nation are getting into the act. Although the sport doesn't officially exist, some are calling it ‘Venatio’, after Chris Venatio, who was the originator. But most call it the 'energy fights' or even just the 'fights'. So what happens at an energy fight? Two combatants, or sometimes two groups of many combatants, square against each other in an open area with plenty of obstacles, like a field filled with large boulders or trees. A rock quarry might make a great arena, although most use vacant lots, a field, or a clearing somewhere out in a forest. What do they do there? This is Chris Venatio's big contribution to the sport. As a student at Atraville College graduating three years ago, Chris had invented both of the major components of the sport: the sword and the shield. The sword is a weapon that packs a powerful electric punch, like a bolt of lightning, except that it travels by way of the omni-electric field. It’s all voltage with very little current. So don’t worry, moms, it might sting but it isn’t able to cause any harm. The other important component, the shield, works by two titidium antenna’s at right angles. The shield is an electric field that repels electric shots, since electrons repel each other, and covers the vitals of the head and the chest. These are generally called the helmet and the breastplate. There is also a movable shield centered over the opposite forearm from the sword, offering extra protection. Both the sword and the shield require too much power to be supplied by the omni-electric field, so Chris also developed a power pack to go along with them. Projectile weapons are useless against such a shield, so don't even bother to try. Besides, anything that endangers the circle of spectators is against the rules. In addition to the sword and the shield, most combatants will wear anti-gravity air soccer-type shoes, allowing them to jump and flip high up in the air and adding an extra dimension to the game. Once the pack is switched on, the fight begins, and the last one still standing is the victor. You want to see a fight? Not to worry. They've become so popular that a Venatio Dueling Commission (VDC) has been created to regulate them; soon they'll be available on omni-vision. Although the rock quarry fights will continue, college teams are being assembled with a coaching staff, advertising contracts, regulation fights, and everything else to go with it. There will even be a tournament at the end of the season. So look around and look out; there’s probably a fight happening near you now.
