The crowd was perhaps the largest the games had ever boasted. The clearing in the forest in the northeast corner of the campus where the games were usually held couldn't even hold most of them. Many had climbed trees to be able to watch while others just had to languish in the forest and listen to the sordid sounds. But even being so many, there were so few that cheered or clapped for the victors. Everyone rather seemed to be horrified. The three shadows shimmered then appeared as recognizable; Todd Vals, Briel Gimei, and Cecil Metus.
"The Champions, the champions, the champions,…" The chant came from one corner of the clearing where Jason Volgende, Brad Aanhang, and Antony Seurata stood among an assortment of others of Cecil's supporters, including Harley Impropio who was jumping up and down like a cheerleader. Other than that, though, enthusiasts were difficult to find. Opposite the three, there were ten guys who were slowly picking themselves from the ground, looking disoriented and beaten.
"That match didn't even last two seconds," said a lanky, horrified guy sitting far out from the circle on a low branch on the edge of the clearing.
"It's just like all the others," agreed his downcast friend who's face was marked with pimples.
Joram Contendo and Nick Soek had just arrived late, hoping to see at least the last part of the fight. "What happened?" Joram called up to the two in the tree, almost accidentally. He really wasn't expecting a response since most people were still ignoring them.
"Absolutely nothing," responded the lanky guy to their pleasant surprise.
"Yeah. It was so fast that there wasn't anything to see."
"How can an energy match be over that fast?" Nick asked.
The two dropped to the ground in front of Joram and Nick.
"Haven't you seen them fight before?" asked the pimply guy.
"Nobody's ever lasted more than two seconds against them," added the lanky one.
Joram and Nick looked at each other.
"Against who?"
The lanky guy shrugged, "That guy everyone called the champion must've somehow joined with Todd Vals and Briel Gimei from Scelestus's group. The three fight together now."
"Nobody can beat them."
"Yeah, and this time ten guys tried to team up against them, and this is what happened."
The crowd began to disperse around them.
"Fights all over," said someone tromping past them.
"Didn't hardly even begin," complained another.
"Unbelievable shame that no one can beat those guys."
"Not even ten…"
"I guess this is the end of the games," said the lanky guy as the four began walking back to their dorms.
"What do you mean?" Joram asked.
He shrugged, "Who's ever going to want to fight them now?"
