The Champion Fights Again

"I like this energy," Cecil Metus said with a clenched grimace. He had just blasted Briel Gimei across the underground cavern so that he slammed against the rocky wall.
"No! Not him!" shrieked the golden-haired Harley Impropio.
"He can handle it," Todd Vals reassured her. "He's taken hits before."
"Sure," griped Briel mockingly while picking himself up from the rocky floor. "I can handle it, but you better watch your backside when we get out of here."
Harley giggled in response, and Cecil growled approvingly.
Jason Volgende, Brad Aanhang, and Antony Seurata stood back from Harley as if they weren't quite sure they wanted to be there.
"All right," said Todd, "let's try a match."
Cecil squared against Todd in the middle of the cavern strewn with large boulders and a globe of light floating just below the ceiling. Harley stood over a black box with colorful lights in the opposite corner from Briel.
"Shake hands," commanded Harley acting as the official of the game. Todd and Cecil both reached their hands forward with obvious elements of distrust in their hesitations, and reached down to devices on their belts. Their figures subsequently darkened so that they were both shadows of themselves.
      "This is power," growled Cecil.
"Yeah it is," Todd answered. "You ready?"
Cecil answered by whipping a crude pipe and box contraption from his belt and firing. The blast flattened the area where Todd had been standing.
"Cecil won," danced Harley, obviously eager to vindicate Briel's earlier loss to Todd.
Another blast shot across where Cecil had been standing. "Not so fast," Todd answered from behind one of the boulders.
More blasts rocked the cavern when Cecil jumped up from his position in a crevasse and nearly missed Todd. Briel and Harley watched as blasts rocked the large open area back and forth as Todd and Cecil jumped and fired, scrambled and blasted each other one after the other, and even in tandem. Harley seemed to have grown accustomed to the forceful blasts and no longer screamed with each one, giggling more often instead. But she screamed once more when Cecil somehow was able to once again escape Todd's blast and had attached him from behind, blasting him to the hard rocky floor.
"He's off his feet. He won!" screamed Harley. "He's the Champion again!"
"The Champion, the champion, the champion," chanted Brad, Jason, and Antony.
"That he is," agreed Briel. "That he is."
"Congrats are in order," Todd said smoothly while picking himself up from the ground. "You did that amazingly for someone who's never fought with the energy before."
Cecil looked back at him with an unblinking, solid stare.
"So how would you like to join the Venatio Team with me and Briel? We'd be unbeatable."
"Yeah," Cecil answered slowly with just a sliver of a smile. That was a lot for him.
