Following Todd

The tall, well- built Antony Seurata walked with his friend Melissa through the student center. There were perhaps hundreds of people carrying their packs and portals that passed them in either direction, but he didn't notice, obviously taken by her beautiful smile, feathery brown hair, and soft features. "Why won't you go out with me?"
"I already told you: because you hang out with those guys," Melissa said without looking at him.
"Yeah, but you never told me what you find so wrong with them."
She sighed, "They do bad things."
      "What kind of things?"
"I don't know. Just bad things."
He stopped her with a hand on one shoulder and faced her. Hundreds brushed past them, but neither one noticed.
"Just go out with me, just once," he pressed her. "We'll talk about it. What can be wrong with just once?"
She sighed again, "I don't know."
He smiled at her through a face that was handsome in a nerdy sort of way. "Think about it? Please?"
"Alright," she smiled in return. It was a smile that made him feel light-headed and dizzy. "I'll think about it."
      "See you later?"
      "Where? When?"
"Find me on the omni system."
Antony fought through the streams of people, crossed through the gymnasium and entered the Van de Graaf Library. There he found his plump and boyish friend, Brad Aanhang, and Todd Vals a few tables away.
"What's he been doing?" asked Antony, startling Brad.
"He hasn't even moved. He's been sitting there like a rock, just studying."
      "What's he been studying?"
      "How should I know?"
"You muon, you've got to know. What if it's about the fights? You should have been finding out! How are we going to find out how he beat Cecil unless you find out everything he's doing?
"I can't do that, without him seeing us, I mean!"
Antony was incensed. "You gotta use your-"
Antony never finished because Todd was joined by Briel Gimei. They watched silently as Todd pointed to some information on the portal he was studying, discussing some hidden aspects of the data, which Antony and Brad weren't able to hear.
"Now we don't know what they're saying either!" Antony charged angrily.
      "How are you going to-"
"Let's go," Antony commanded. Todd had put his portal in his pack, and he and Briel were heading towards the door of the library. They followed them, taking the outside sidewalk past the administrative center, the architecture building, an old shack that had once been Dirac Hall, and into the new fifteen-floor physics building, keeping a careful distance to avoid being noticed. They followed them up to the top floor, watching first which floor the elevator stopped at, then following in a separate elevator.
"That's Scelestus's office," Brad hissed as they rounded a corner.
      "Let's listen in."
      "How can you do that?"
"Watch and learn," Antony said proudly while reaching into his pack. He removed a device with a black titidium antenna at one end. "This will tap into the omni system."
"You can listen to somebody through the omni system?"
"The omni field is everywhere; it's just a matter of knowing how to tap it. You can find people, listen to what they're saying; do just about anything."
Antony made some adjustments on the device, and he and Brad were listening to the conversations between Dr. Scelestus, Todd, and Briel behind the closed door of Dr. Scelestus's office. They stayed there for most of the afternoon, listening, the revelation coming through the bits of information they heard.
"They're using Gero energy," Brad exclaimed.
Antony nodded. "That's how he beat Cecil. Scelestus's involved too."
"That stuff must be powerful. Really powerful."
Antony nodded again. "We've got to tell Cecil."
He looked up and found that he was suddenly facing Melissa. Her smile was gone and her features were no longer soft. "The answer's no."
