Cecil Metus, with a heavy cast over his right hand, pounded hard on the door of his follower Jason Volgende with the other hand.
"He cheated," he said through clenched teeth when the door had reluctantly opened. "He cheated. Get the others. HURRY!"
Jason, skinny and more timid than Cecil's other followers, looked warily at the cast and then at the clenched left fist and was smart enough to obey. About half an hour later, Cecil was pacing in the center of his dorm room while Jason, Antony Seurata and Brad Aanhang sat listening to his ranting.
"We're going to get him back," Cecil said. "We're going to find out how he did it, and beat him at his own game."
"How are you going to do that?" asked Jason a little too eagerly, his eye still on the cast. He wasn't as clever as the other two and this wasn't his wisest moment. Antony and Brad both gave him disparaging glances.
Cecil clenched his good left fist and waved it over his head, "Glad you guys asked. I have something for you to do."
That afternoon, Jason's skinny body was weaving in and out of masses in the student union.
"Jason!" Brad yelled from behind him. He was rather plump and was having some trouble catching him. "Jason!" He yelled again.
Jason turned abruptly, running in to a small, wiry girl who looked disdainfully at the skinny, nerdy guy. "Not so loud," he said when he saw Brad. "He'll hear us." He turned back around, "You proton, now you made me lose him."
"He's right there," Brad pointed ahead to the curly locks of Todd Vals who had stopped to talk with an attractive, stylishly dressed girl.
"Duck behind here," Jason commanded, jumping behind a portable Bumbling Burger stand that was just off to the side of the main aisle of traffic through the center. They waited behind the stand for a few minutes until Todd moved on again, following him through the center and across to the neighboring fifteen- floor physics building.
"I didn't know this building had a basement," said Brad.
"You follow him from here," Jason said. "My shift's over."
"Wait," said Brad. "C'mon with me. Let's just see where he goes, and I'll watch him from there."
"Yeah, alright," Jason agreed as they tiptoed down long flights of steps. "I guess I would like to know where he's going."
They turned a corner, and went down, and down, and down.
"This is a lot more than a basement." Jason held up his hand for Brad when they finally came in sight of the last flight and saw Todd opening a heavy steal door. "This has got to be part of that underground tunnel system, you know, with the omni-electric generators and all that." Jason and Brad waited awhile before opening the steal door just a crack and peering through. Jason was the first to take a look, "That doesn't look like an omni-electric generator, though."
"This is huge," exclaimed Brad when he had peered through the crack.
"I'm going to report to Cecil," said Jason a little over-excitedly.
