Zhi was from a different place. He was originally from the country of Luottaa and only recently immigrated to the United States. Civil war killed his parents and siblings, and so he decided to come to this country for refuge from the bitter, continuing war that had taken everything from him. He had citizenship only a couple of years and was still struggling to manage the English language when he found work as a grounds keeper at Atraville College. It was perhaps his best break, but it was still hard for him, living a lonely life. There are few people from Luottaa in the states, especially in the Atraville area. The students often mock him, or else just ignore him completely as he performs his grounds work around the campus. What will they think of him after dark energy ravages the college? Is he the savior, victim, or the cause?
Name etymology: Zhi means “wise or wisdom” in Chinese Mandarin and Samajha means “wisdom” in Hindi. His country, Luottaa, means “faith” in Finnish. Zhi is a person without father or mother, with a genealogy destroyed by war, from a different place and in a some sense not from this world at all. His country is faith, and through his faith he makes the right choice and becomes wise in a world where everyone who rejects him is making the wrong choice.
