Tomma Torstig:

Tomma's brilliant father committed suicide, the reason for which was never determined, but he left her mother with a breakdown dealing with the tragedy. Since her mother was considered unfit, Tomma went between several foster parents before finding an amicable situation, but spent most of her childhood in a Chicago suburb disturbed over her family situation. She never learned to relate well with her peers, and never learned such simple things as how to do her hair or make up her face, or many of the things over which young teens usually obsess. Instead she latched possessively to Anika and Earlen and even followed them when they enrolled at Atraville College, deciding to study under the famous Dr. Reproba. Imagine her reaction when the darkness she thought was only a terrible part of her own broken world comes upon the entire campus.

Name etymology: Tomma means “empty” in Swedish, and torstig means “thirsty” in Swedish. Tomma was different from her friends Anika and Earlen, in that she was empty and thirsty, and looking for something different instead of just adhering to what is false in the world.
